Church on MISSION
The Oxford Dictionary defines “mission” as the vocation or calling of a religious organization, especially a Christian one, to go out into the world and spread its faith.
This is exactly what Jesus said too!
“Jesus came and told his disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’”
Matthew 28:18-20
This is the mission of the Church—regardless of location, country, government, economy, ethnicity, or circumstance. The mission is to go out, lead people to Jesus, and help them become disciples.
Within this mission lies the solution to the problems we see in the world. Jesus changes the world one person at a time. When people are transformed from the inside out, the brokenness in society is exposed and healed.
Jesus is the answer because He addresses the core issue of all issues—sin! When sin is broken, people are healed. When sin is removed, the brokenness around us can be restored. If we attempt to fix issues without addressing the root cause, our efforts are incomplete. We need Jesus.
He cleanses us from sin and redeems our lives for His glory. When this happens, He empowers us to be part of the Church on MISSION!
But to do this requires focus, intentionality, and having God’s heart for people.
The Church on MISSION
A church on mission is a hospital that reaches out to others, providing healing, acceptance, conviction, growth, and new beginnings. God is a healer, and when His people move in His mission, individuals experience healing too.
The mission is salvation—seeing souls saved and discipled. This means local churches must be evangelistic, reaching out and welcoming everyone. A church on mission is a church with purpose, fulfilling His purpose.
This means we major on the majors!
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. People, people, people. The mission lifts our vision, expands our faith, and compels us to believe in what God can do. We don’t have time to be distracted by minor issues—worship styles, church size, house church versus big church, preaching preferences, denominational superiority, political debates, insecurity, or pettiness that causes division.
This is NOT the mission.
The early Church fulfilled its mission in the midst of a pagan empire—and that empire was transformed by the love of God.
This example shows us that a Church on MISSION is about Jesus changing us, and from that transformation, we show others who He is. We can say it this way:
Saved people serve people. Saved people share Jesus with people. Saved people show people Jesus.
We are NOT called to be Bible snobs, thinking we’re better than other Christians or non-Christians. This misses the mission, and sadly, it’s all too common.
We must lay down our personal preferences for His presence and be the Church on MISSION.
Receiving God’s Heart for the Mission
The heart of God is revealed in the mission Jesus gave us, which means we must continually receive His heart to do life His way. To see others through His eyes. To grow and become who He wants us to be.
Of course, we need to know what we believe and have a firm foundation in Jesus. But the reality is that our knowledge often exceeds our obedience. We know what to do, yet we struggle to do it.
Growing in knowledge and being discipled is essential. But discipled to what?
Being discipled is NOT about being shaped into a church culture or style alone. We must be discipled to lead others to Jesus—to be people who show the way, lead the way, and walk in the way of Jesus. Simply regurgitating knowledge to Christians is NOT the mission.
Empowering Christians to do the mission with the knowledge of God is.
We must know His heart and His Word. We must know the Holy Spirit and His Word. We must know His voice and His Word. It’s always both!
A Church on MISSION sees the masses and loves the one. Furthermore, they reach the masses and love the one.
Now is the Time!
Now is the time to be on fire for Jesus. Burn with passion for His mission and do it. Now is the time to love God and love people at a deeper level. Now is the time for churches to grow, build, reach their cities, and give generously of their time, resources, and faith.
We are NOT called to debate what the mission is. We are called to DO the mission and make a difference for Jesus.
Two Ways to Do This
1. Reach the Lost
Every Christian is called to reach those far from God. This is NOT just a calling for a few—it’s for everyone because every Christian is called to His mission.
So, who in your life is far from Jesus?
They are in your life on purpose—for you to show them Christ and lead them to Him. We must have relationships with people who don’t know Him. We must engage in our daily lives and routines with those who need His love.
- Pray for the lost.
- Befriend the lost.
- Love the lost.
- Talk to the lost.
People see Jesus through us! We must move so they see Him.
2. Know What Church Should Be
The Church cannot be a club for Christians to gather and engage in soapbox debates. We are called to more.
The Church is meant to provide community for believers and to reach those far from God. It is called to grow, reach out, serve others, give, be proactive, love the saints, and love the sinners. We are called to serve our cities so we can win our cities to Jesus.
We must resist the comfort of “church as usual” and avoid getting trapped in a religious stupor. There is something better. There is something more!
It’s Jesus and His Church on MISSION!
Step Into the Mission
I encourage you to be part of this mission. Let Jesus move through your life for eternal impact!
“With God, nothing is impossible.”
Luke 1:37
God is with you, and the best is yet to come.
