Growing a Healthy Church: Building Faith That Multiplies

In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.”
2 Peter 1:5–7

Church Growth Begins with Spiritual Growth

Lasting growth begins in the heart. Before we see growth around us, Scripture reminds us that we must first see growth within us. A thriving church is made up of thriving believers. While strategy matters, the foundation of church growth is spiritual maturity. Peter presents a clear, Spirit-led path for how faith develops and multiplies, strengthening believers and strengthening the church.

1. Faith Is the Foundation

Peter begins with faith, the starting point of all spiritual life. Every church growth story begins with people coming to faith in Jesus Christ. Yet faith is not static; it is a living seed that must be nourished.

When believers grow in prayer, worship, and the Word, the entire church becomes fertile ground for new disciples. Growth happens naturally when faith is alive, vibrant, and visible.

2. Add Moral Excellence: Living What We Believe

Moral excellence calls us to a life of integrity and character that reflects Jesus. A church that embodies holiness earns the trust of its community.

In a world skeptical of institutions, credibility is essential. When we walk in moral excellence, the message of Christ gains power and clarity. Church growth flows from trust, consistency, and authenticity.

3. Add Knowledge: Growing in the Word

Knowledge of God’s Word keeps a church grounded and moving in the right direction. Congregations who prioritize Scripture naturally see transformation.

Bible studies, discipleship classes, and small groups are not simply programs, they are growth pathways. The more deeply a church knows God, the more confidently it can share His truth with the world.

4. Add Self-Control and Endurance: Growth Takes Time

Peter reminds us that spiritual growth requires both self-control and patient endurance. Church growth is cultivated, not microwaved.

Healthy churches stay faithful through seasons of challenge or waiting. Leaders must exercise wisdom and discipline, trusting God’s timing. Endurance strengthens unity, resilience, and vision.

5. Add Godliness and Brotherly Affection: Building a Culture of Honor

Godliness means reflecting Christ in our daily lives. Brotherly affection means treating one another with kindness, humility, and compassion.

A church that honors and cares for its people is irresistible. When outsiders witness genuine Christian love and unity, they want to be a part of it. Love creates belonging and belonging multiplies growth.

6. Add Love for Everyone: The Heart of Church Growth

Peter ends with the highest expression of spiritual maturity love for everyone.

Love is the magnet of church growth. Churches that love beyond their walls serving the poor, embracing diversity, welcoming the hurting demonstrates the heart of Jesus.

Marketing may get attention, but love transforms lives.

A growing church is a loving church because love is the soil where faith multiplies.

A growing church is a loving church because love is the soil where faith multiplies.

Conclusion: Growth That Glorifies God

Church growth involves both expansion and transformation. As we follow Peter’s blueprint adding faith, virtue, knowledge, endurance, godliness, and love we actively participate in God’s plan to build His Church.

When believers grow in Christ, the Church grows with them. When our character deepens, our influence expands. And when our love increases, the light of Jesus shines brighter.

Let’s make every effort, as Peter instructs, to respond to God’s promises.
Let’s choose growth individually and collectively so that our lives and churches reflect the fullness of Christ.

Choose GROWTH, both personally and as a church.
