The Heart of Church Growth: Doing Something for Jesus
Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.
Matthew 9:35–38 NLT
The Example of Jesus in Church Growth
When we talk about church growth, we must begin with the example of Jesus Himself. Matthew tells us that Jesus went from town to town, village to village, not waiting for people to come to Him but actively seeking out the lost, the broken, and the hurting. He taught the Word, announced the Kingdom of God, and healed every kind of disease and illness.
Church growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when God’s people are willing to go, teach, serve, and care for others the way Jesus did.
Compassion Is the Key to Growth
Church growth is not just about numbers; it’s about lives being transformed by compassion. Scripture tells us that when Jesus saw the crowds, He had compassion on them. Why? Because they were “confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
This truth still stands today. People around us struggle with loneliness, anxiety, financial pressures, broken relationships, and a lack of direction. What they need most is not another program or motivational talk, they need Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
Church growth is not just about numbers; it’s about lives being transformed by compassion.
The Harvest Is Ready
Jesus reminded His disciples and us that “the harvest is great.” That means people are always ready to hear the Good News. The problem is not the harvest; the problem is the workers.
Church growth will not happen if we expect the pastor or a small group of leaders to carry the entire load. Every believer has a role to play. Each Christian can witness, pray, serve, and invite. Strong leadership is essential in equipping others to step into their calling. Doing Something for Jesus
It’s easy to fall into the trap of attending church without engaging in ministry, but Jesus calls us to do something for Him.
- Pray for workers. Begin with prayer, asking God to raise up people with a heart for the harvest.
- Serve where you are. Whether it’s greeting at the door, teaching children, joining a prayer team, or helping with outreach, every act of service fuels growth.
- Share your faith. A personal story of how Jesus changed your life is powerful and relatable.
- Invite others. A simple invitation to church, Bible study, or a small group can open the door for transformation.
Church growth happens when ordinary believers do extraordinary things for Jesus, one act of obedience at a time.
Why This Matters Today
We live in a world desperate for truth, hope, and direction. If the church stays silent, people will continue to wander “like sheep without a shepherd.” But when we rise up and answer the call, the harvest will be gathered.
God’s plan has always been to use His people to build His Kingdom. When we commit to doing something for Jesus, the result is not just numerical growth but spiritual transformation.
Final Encouragement
Church growth is not about filling seats but about filling hearts with the love of Christ. Jesus showed us the way: He taught, He healed, He had compassion, and He called for workers. Today, He is calling you and me to step into the harvest field.
The harvest is ready. The workers are few. Will you be one of them?
