Why We Need Growing Churches

The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.

Acts 9:31 (NLT)

Every pastor, church leader, and believer desires to see their church flourish. That desire isn’t rooted in pride or popularity, it reflects God’s heart. Jesus came to seek and save those who are lost, and His Church exists to continue that mission.

Acts 9:31 provides a powerful blueprint for healthy church growth. Following Saul’s dramatic conversion and a season of intense persecution, the early church experienced peace. However, instead of becoming comfortable, believers used that season to deepen their relationship with God, strengthen one another, and continue reaching people with the gospel.

The result was both spiritual maturity and numerical growth. Growing churches don’t chase crowds, they cultivate healthy disciples, and healthy disciples naturally reach people for Christ.

Growing churches don’t chase crowds, they cultivate healthy disciples, and healthy disciples naturally reach people for Christ.

Growing Strong Before Growing Large

Luke tells us that “the church…became stronger.” Before mentioning numerical growth, Scripture highlights spiritual strength.

God is far more concerned with building mature disciples than simply filling seats. Yet healthy disciples naturally lead to healthy, growing churches.

Strong churches intentionally invest in:

  • Biblical teaching
  • Passionate prayer
  • Christ-centered worship
  • Intentional discipleship
  • Evangelistic outreach
  • Authentic relationships through small groups

When believers grow spiritually, the entire church becomes healthier. Healthy churches are built on transformed lives, not impressive programs.

Living in the Fear of the Lord

Acts 9:31 also tells us that believers “lived in the fear of the Lord.”

Biblical fear is not about terror. Instead, it is a deep reverence, honor, and obedience toward God. Churches that prioritize God’s Word above cultural trends create environments where genuine life change takes place.

A church that fears God will:

  • Love God wholeheartedly.
  • Love people sincerely.
  • Walk in humility.
  • Pursue holiness.
  • Reflect Christ in everyday life.

When a congregation honors God, His presence becomes evident among His people. Lives change because people encounter Him, not merely a service.

Encouraged by the Holy Spirit

Luke also records that the church experienced “the encouragement of the Holy Spirit.”

Church growth is ultimately the work of the Holy Spirit. While strategy and leadership matter, they can never replace His power.

The Holy Spirit:

  • Comforts discouraged believers.
  • Empowers leaders.
  • Convicts hearts.
  • Equips volunteers.
  • Produces spiritual fruit.
  • Unites the church around Christ’s mission.

When churches intentionally welcome the Holy Spirit, people don’t simply attend services, they experience the transforming presence of God.

Numerical Growth Follows Spiritual Health

Notice the progression found in Acts 9:31:

  1. Peace
  2. Spiritual strength
  3. Reverence for God
  4. Encouragement from the Holy Spirit
  5. Growth in numbers

This order matters.

The early church multiplied because healthy believers naturally shared their faith. Church growth is not about building a larger organization, it is about reaching more people with the hope of Jesus Christ.

Every number represents a person.

Every person represents a soul.

Every soul matters deeply to God.

Healthy churches naturally become evangelistic churches because healthy believers cannot keep the good news to themselves.

Practical Ways Churches Can Grow Today

The principles found in Acts remain just as relevant today.

Churches can position themselves for healthy growth by:

  • Prioritizing prayer in every ministry.
  • Teaching Scripture faithfully and clearly.
  • Developing leaders through intentional discipleship.
  • Creating authentic community through small groups.
  • Empowering every believer to discover and use their gifts.
  • Sharing the gospel consistently both inside and outside the church.
  • Remaining dependent upon the Holy Spirit rather than relying solely on human methods.

Programs may attract people for a season, but only the Holy Spirit transforms lives for eternity.

A Church Worth Building

Every generation longs for revival. Yet revival begins when God’s people become hungry for Him.

Acts 9:31 reminds us that lasting church growth flows from spiritual health. Churches that fear the Lord, welcome the Holy Spirit, strengthen believers, and faithfully proclaim Christ become places where lives are transformed and communities are impacted.

Jesus loves His Church. He continues building it today, and He invites every believer to participate in that mission.

I encourage you to become fully invested in a growing church. Pray faithfully. Serve joyfully. Give generously. Share your faith boldly. Participate in what matters most to Jesus.

As you do, God will use your life to make an eternal difference.
