The Opportunity When Life Tests You
Life has a way of leading us into seasons we never expected. Sometimes doors close without warning. At other times, prayers seem unanswered, opportunities disappear, and progress feels painfully slow. During those moments, it may appear that nothing is happening. Yet beneath the surface, God is doing some of His greatest work.
Throughout Scripture, we discover that God often uses seasons of testing to prepare His people for greater purposes. Few biblical examples illustrate this better than the life of Joseph. His journey reminds us that what feels like delay may actually be preparation, and what appears to be punishment may instead become a pathway to purpose. God never wastes a season of testing. The Reality of Life’s Testing Seasons
Testing doesn’t always arrive as a dramatic crisis. Sometimes it comes through silence. Other times it appears as rejection, disappointment, injustice, or unexpected hardship.
Psalm 105 gives us an honest picture of Joseph’s journey:
They bruised his feet with fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar. Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph’s character. Then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free; the ruler of the nation opened his prison door. Joseph was put in charge of all the king’s household; he became ruler over all the king’s possessions.

This passage reveals a truth many believers wrestle with. Joseph received a promise from God, yet the road to its fulfillment led through pain before promotion.
That pattern still speaks to us today.
Joseph: Living Between Promise and Prison
Joseph received dreams from God while he was still young. Those dreams pointed toward influence and leadership, yet his circumstances seemed to move in the opposite direction.
Instead, Joseph experienced:
- Betrayal by his brothers
- Slavery in Egypt
- False accusations
- Imprisonment
- Being forgotten by those he helped
From a human perspective, everything appeared to be falling apart. However, Psalm 105 reveals what heaven saw all along: “The Lord tested Joseph’s character.”
Those few words completely change the way we view Joseph’s story. God wasn’t ignoring Joseph. He was preparing him.
What Does It Mean That God Tests Us?
Biblical testing is very different from punishment.
God doesn’t test us to make us fail. Instead, He refines, strengthens, and matures us. Just as fire purifies gold, trials refine our faith and develop godly character.
Joseph’s testing wasn’t designed to destroy him. It prepared him for an assignment far greater than he could have imagined.
Here are three lessons every season of testing teaches us.
1. Testing Reveals What Is Already Within You
Pressure doesn’t create character, it reveals it.
Joseph had every reason to become bitter. Betrayal could have hardened his heart. Prison could have stolen his hope. Waiting could have tempted him to compromise.
Instead, his life consistently displayed integrity, humility, faithfulness, and trust in God.
Likewise, our response during difficult seasons often reveals whether our lives rest on changing emotions or unchanging convictions.
2. Testing Prepares You Before Promotion
One of Scripture’s most consistent principles is that preparation always comes before promotion.
Joseph didn’t become Egypt’s leader overnight.
His years of serving in Potiphar’s house taught him administration.
Managing prisoners developed leadership.
Interpreting dreams sharpened spiritual discernment.
Waiting cultivated patience, humility, and dependence upon God.
By the time Pharaoh called for Joseph, he possessed more than a dream. He had developed the character necessary to steward the responsibility God was about to entrust to him.
3. Testing Aligns You with God’s Timing
Psalm 105 tells us Joseph remained in prison: “Until the time came to fulfill his dreams…”
Those words are incredibly encouraging.
Joseph wasn’t forgotten.
He wasn’t abandoned.
He wasn’t permanently overlooked.
He simply had not yet arrived at God’s appointed time.
Often, the greatest challenge during testing is trusting God’s timing instead of demanding our own.
While we wait, God works behind the scenes in ways we cannot yet see.
The Prison Was Never the End
Eventually, everything changed.
“Then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free.”
In a single day, Joseph went from:
- Prisoner to Prime Minister
- Forgotten to favored
- Slave to ruler
This isn’t merely a story about success.
It’s a testimony of God’s faithfulness, perfect timing, and sovereign plan.
The promotion came after the preparation.
How Should We Respond When Life Tests Us?
If you’re walking through a difficult season today, Joseph’s example offers practical guidance.
- Remain faithful where God has placed you. Faithfulness in small assignments prepares you for greater opportunities.
- Don’t mistake delay for denial. God’s “not yet” often protects us until we’re ready.
- Guard your heart against bitterness. Choose forgiveness instead of offense, even when circumstances seem unfair.
- Protect your character. Opportunities may come suddenly, but only character can sustain lasting success.
The Purpose Behind Every Test
Psalm 105 doesn’t simply describe Joseph’s suffering. It explains its purpose.
“The Lord tested Joseph’s character.”
His trials weren’t random. They were intentional.
God wasn’t absent in Joseph’s prison. He was actively preparing him for the palace.
The same remains true for us today.
Every season of testing provides an opportunity to grow in faith, deepen our dependence on God, and become more like Christ.
Your Testing Has an Expiration Date
Testing may feel endless while you’re living through it, but Scripture reminds us it is temporary.
Joseph’s prison was real.
It was painful.
But it was never permanent.
If you’re facing pressure, disappointment, or uncertainty today, remember this:
God isn’t simply watching your life, He is shaping it.
The season you’re in today is preparing you for what He has planned tomorrow.
Stay faithful.
Keep trusting.
Continue walking with Him.
