Domino Leadership

According to Guinness World Records, the longest domino wall ever set up spans 51.7 meters (169 feet, 7 inches) and was achieved by a team in Taylor, Michigan.

We’ve all seen intricate domino layouts, and perhaps even created one ourselves. But the most satisfying part is watching them all connect and fall seamlessly.

The concept is simple: one domino hits the next, creating a chain reaction for as long as they are set up. This is a powerful picture of leadership and how our actions impact those around us—for better or for worse.

Whether we witness this up close or from a distance, we know it’s true: leadership influences everything. Generational impact is inevitable, which means what we do today matters far more than we often realize.

The Generational Effect of Leadership

Our leadership choices determine whether we are getting ahead or constantly playing catch-up. What we do today directly shapes tomorrow.

When a person lives for Jesus, their faith can influence generations of their family.

“And this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit will not leave them, and neither will these words I have given you. They will be on your lips and on the lips of your children and your children’s children forever. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

Isaiah 59:21

This verse illustrates the generational domino effect of faith in Jesus. The same principle applies to churches, businesses, nations, and beyond. Leaders aren’t just leading in the present—they are shaping the future.

When we embrace this perspective, we shift from reactive leadership to proactive leadership, intentionally preparing the next generation to carry the mission forward.

Too many leaders focus only on their tenure, achievements, and immediate impact. While these are important, we must also look ahead and set up the dominos for future success rather than leaving others to scramble and catch up.

Throughout history, churches, families, businesses, and nations have fallen behind because previous leaders failed to plan for the future.

God blesses generations. The Hebrews referred to Him as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—highlighting the importance of generational legacy and blessing.

The Domino Effect in God’s Plan

Our God is generational. Jesus Himself came through a human family lineage, with each generation playing a role in His birth and the redemption of the world.

The genealogy of Jesus includes people like Rahab, Ruth, Boaz, and David—each with their own story and contribution to the greater purpose. They were part of the divine domino effect leading to Christ’s arrival and our salvation.

The same is true today. Our actions influence people coming to Jesus now and in the years to come. What we do today has a far-reaching impact on future generations. That’s why we must think beyond the present and focus on transition.

So, how are your dominos falling today? Are they leading to advancement or merely playing catch-up?

I encourage you to think strategically—not just about your current role, but about your legacy. Your efforts matter more than you realize.

Three Keys to Setting Up the Right Dominos

1. Don’t Quit

We all have long, challenging days—especially in ministry. But don’t quit. What you’re doing has both eternal significance and future impact.

None of us will fully see the measure of our influence because the kingdom of God operates like a seed—it takes time to grow. However, we will see fruit from our efforts now, and when we think ahead, we can set up the dominos for long-term success.

Please keep going. Don’t be discouraged by what’s right in front of you. God is bigger, your impact is bigger, and the dominos of your faith are falling further than you know.

2. Empower Others

You can have control or you can have growth—but you can’t have both. Which one do you want?

When we empower others, they grow individually, we grow as leaders, and our organizations grow in purpose. However, empowering others can be challenging. It requires intentionality and trust.

What we do with this responsibility determines where the dominos fall. I strongly encourage you to let others lead by releasing control and giving them the opportunity to step up.

Jesus modeled this with His twelve disciples. He empowered them, and as a result, the church multiplied—and it continues to multiply today.

If Jesus entrusted His mission to others, so can we. We must empower others for our churches, businesses, and ministries to grow and thrive in the future.

You can have control or you can have growth—but you can’t have both. Which one do you want?

3. Build Relationships

Leadership is built on relationships, which are founded on trust. Developing trust takes time, consistency, and effort—but it’s always worth it.

For dominos to fall in the right direction, relationships must be prioritized. Everything rises and falls on leadership, and leadership rises and falls on relationships.

If you don’t invest in relationships, leadership won’t happen. But if you do, leadership will flourish and multiply.

There are no shortcuts. Building relationships requires intentionality and an open heart—especially when it comes to connecting with younger generations.

We must create space for younger leaders to belong, lead, and grow. Being a generational leader means reaching and investing in people across different age groups.

I believe the healthiest churches are those that include Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—three generations worshiping together. We need leaders who build relational bridges across generations to establish a strong foundation for the future.

I strongly encourage you to cultivate relationships that last. Engage with different age groups and move forward in your leadership with a generational mindset.

The Dominos Will Fall—Which Direction Will They Go?

The question isn’t whether the dominos will fall—they will. The real question is whether they will fall toward advancement or toward playing catch-up.

What we do today plays a crucial role in answering that question.

Be a domino leader who sets the stage for expansion and growth in the next generation.

You can do this, and your best days are ahead!
