A Godly Marriage Built on Jesus
Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.
“At last!” the man exclaimed.
“This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh!
She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.”’
This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.
Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.
Genesis 2:22–25 (NLT)
Marriage was God’s idea from the very beginning. In the Garden of Eden before sin ever entered the world God created the covenant of marriage as a sacred union between man and woman. Genesis 2:22–25 gives us the first picture of marriage: one rooted in intimacy, unity, and divine design.
If we want marriages that last and flourish, we must return to that foundation and build them on Jesus Christ.
In this blog, we’ll explore how Scripture teaches us to live out a Godly marriage built on Jesus, why unity matters, and how couples can reflect Christ’s love through their relationship.
1. God Designed Marriage for Unity
When Adam first saw Eve, his response was one of joy and recognition: “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh!” (Genesis 2:23). Eve wasn’t a random addition to Adam’s life, she was the perfect counterpart designed by God.
This reminds us that marriage is not a man-made contract but a God-ordained covenant. A Godly marriage is one where husband and wife become “one flesh,” not only physically but spiritually and emotionally. This level of unity is only possible when both spouses choose to live under God’s authority and guidance.
Reflection Question:
Is your marriage built on convenience or on the unshakable covenant that God designed?
2. Leaving and Cleaving
Genesis 2:24 tells us, “This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”
A marriage built on Jesus requires a shift in priorities. “Leaving” doesn’t mean abandoning family, but it does mean establishing a new primary bond. “Cleaving” to your spouse means holding fast in love, loyalty, and faithfulness.
In a world full of distractions and competing responsibilities, many couples struggle because they never fully embrace this principle. A Christ-centered marriage makes the covenant relationship the highest earthly priority.
3. Naked and Unashamed
The final verse in this passage is profound: “Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame” (Genesis 2:25).
This wasn’t only physical nakedness it represented total vulnerability, trust, and openness. Before sin, Adam and Eve experienced perfect intimacy with each other and with God. That’s the model for biblical marriage today: a relationship where both spouses can be open, honest, and safe because love and grace cover them.
When Jesus is the foundation, shame gives way to grace, fear gives way to trust, and hiding gives way to healing.
A Godly marriage isn’t built on perfection, but on two imperfect people relying daily on a perfect Savior.

4. Marriage Reflects Christ and the Church
The New Testament expands this truth. Ephesians 5:25 commands, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her.” Wives are called to honor and respect their husbands (Ephesians 5:22–24).
This doesn’t suggest dominance or hierarchy, it reveals a partnership of mutual submission to Jesus. In a Christ-centered relationship, love and respect flow both ways. Each spouse models the heart of Christ: serving, forgiving, and giving without condition.

5. Practical Ways to Keep Jesus at the Center
Here are five biblical habits to help couples maintain a marriage built on Jesus:
- Pray together daily – Invite God into every decision and season of your marriage.
- Study Scripture as a couple – Let God’s Word guide your attitudes and actions.
- Forgive quickly – Extend grace as freely as Christ forgave you.
- Serve one another – Seek opportunities to bless and encourage your spouse.
- Worship together – Attend church and grow spiritually as one.
These simple rhythms strengthen both your faith and your unity as husband and wife.

6. A Marriage Without Shame
When Adam and Eve were naked and unashamed, they lived in perfect harmony with God. Because of sin, that intimacy was broken. Yet through Jesus Christ, redemption and restoration are possible.
A Godly marriage built on Jesus doesn’t mean you’ll never have conflict, it means you have a Redeemer who heals what’s broken. When Christ is the center, shame is replaced with grace, fear with faith, and division with unity.
Final Encouragement
Marriage is not always easy, but it is one of God’s greatest gifts. Genesis 2 reminds us that He established marriage as a covenant relationship designed for unity, love, and intimacy.
If you’re married, ask yourself: Is Christ truly at the center of our relationship?
If you’re preparing for marriage, decide now to build it on the foundation of God’s Word.
A Godly marriage built on Jesus isn’t just about finding happiness, it’s about becoming one in Christ, for His glory.
Your marriage has a great purpose through Jesus.
