Family Resolutions
The first month of 2025 is behind us, and as we enter February, many resolutions have already faded into memory for some, while others continue strong. Resolutions can be challenging to keep individually because it’s easy to drift from goals and lifestyle changes when we’re on our own.
But family resolutions can be different. When a family sets goals together, it’s not just about individual accountability; it’s about unity. It builds a bond and directs focus toward something greater than any single person.
I believe 2025 can be a year of growth—spiritually, emotionally, and physically—for our families. Together, we can experience this transformation.
But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.
Joshua 24:15
When a family sets goals together, it’s not just about individual accountability; it’s about unity. It builds a bond and directs focus toward something greater than any single person.
Choosing to Serve the Lord
Notice the decision Joshua made for his family: they would serve the Lord. This is a powerful resolution we can make for our families today. There is no better time than now to reaffirm who your family serves and the foundation upon which your home is built.
Jesus is the firm foundation that holds our homes together and carries the weight of our struggles. He remains steady and steadfast, tender yet strong enough to bind us together and ignite purpose in our lives.
Our families need this resolution because everything else flows from it. Choosing to serve the Lord is a generational and eternal decision.
Practical Steps for Family Resolutions
Here are some practical steps my family is taking this year. Perhaps these can inspire your family to create resolutions that work for you.
Step 1: Read the Bible Together
We got our kids a one-year Bible to help them read through God’s story day by day. This plan allows them to encounter the living, powerful Word of God and understand its transformative power.
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
Hebrews 4:12
Sumer and I are also reading through the Bible as part of our family effort. There is nothing more impactful to read than God’s Word. I encourage you to create a plan and stick with it. God will speak to you, and His Word will transform you.
Step 2: Weekly Family Time Around God
For our family, this happens on Sunday nights. We take communion together, pray, and discuss the upcoming week. This isn’t overly formal but serves as a consistent rhythm where God moves in our lives.
Set aside time to bond as a family around Jesus. Keep distractions like phones away, and focus on being present with one another. Your consistent efforts will open the door for God to work in ways you can’t yet see.
Step 3: One-on-One Time with Your Kids
I’m a big believer in spending one-on-one time with our kids. Building these relationships is vital for their development and strengthens the family bond.
Parents must take the initiative to set the tone and create patterns of connection. If you’re unsure how to start, ask for guidance. When we grow, our kids grow too.
Set aside dedicated one-on-one time with your children and stick to it. Pray with them, talk to them, and nurture your relationship. These efforts will yield significant rewards in the years ahead. If you’re unsure how to do this, ask for help.
Step 4: Make Church a Family Priority
Being part of a local church as a family does something supernatural in our homes. It’s vital to find a healthy church that fosters growth, reaches out, invests in the now generation, and practices biblical principles.
Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Hebrews 10:24-25
No church is perfect but they can be healthy. Go to a healthy church and watch your family grow. It’s one step at a time and when we do this, God is working in ways we can’t see or feel, but He’s moving.
Making church a family priority creates a spiritual foundation for everyone. It takes a village to raise a child, and being part of a church community provides the support we need to thrive.
A Call to Action
So, what are your next steps? God has a family resolution for your home that aligns with His plan for your lives. Make the decision today, and trust that He will provide the strength and guidance you need.
2025 can be a year of generational impact and spiritual growth for your family. Go for it. Let this year be marked by growth in every area of your lives. God is with you, and the best is yet to come.
