The Family Bridge

A bridge is like the centerpiece of a table—it connects two separate ends, making them one.

We’ve all crossed bridges, big and small, using them to travel from one side to the other. They connect places that would otherwise stay apart. And while we often take them for granted, life without bridges would dramatically change how we travel and connect.

Families have bridges too.

But these aren’t made of concrete and steel. They’re heart-to-heart, not city-to-city. They build deep bonds that impact generations. And the bridge that connects a family is humility.

Yes—humility.

Humility opens the door to real communication. It listens. It soothes tension. It apologizes quickly. It seeks the best for the whole family, not just to be “right.” Humility adjusts and makes room for others.

And when it comes to families, these are powerful things.

Humility invites God’s presence, and when He shows up, anything can happen.

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

1 Peter 5:5

Pride goes before destruction; humility precedes honor.

Proverbs 18:12

Humility attracts grace. It leads to honor.

A great pastor once said,
“Honor up, honor down, honor all around.”

When we walk in humility, families thrive. When we walk in pride, they suffer.

1. Humility

Humility helps us understand one another. We listen, serve, say sorry, forgive, show kindness, confront in love, and honor each other.

Every family can have this—but we must choose it.

It means making adjustments, letting the Holy Spirit work in us —instead of focusing on others needing to change.

Humility is the family bridge. It connects and unites us. It’s the centerpiece that brings everyone together—and it’s what God desires for our homes.

Our role?
Be humble toward one another.

2. Pride

Pride does the opposite.

It keeps us from understanding, from listening, from forgiving. Pride serves self. It holds grudges, stays unkind, avoids healthy confrontation, and fosters dishonor.

This breaks the family bridge. Hearts disconnect. Unity falls apart.

Too many families are stuck here.

Pride is a family killer and a joy stealer. It blocks God’s presence and disrupts relationships. This is not the way of Jesus.

But the good news?
Pride can be defeated—through humility.

Ask yourself:
What’s working in your family? Pride or humility?

Choose humility—and take steps to move forward. Your family is worth it. God has a plan for you, and humility is the key to walking it out.

If someone needs to say sorry—say it.
If someone needs to adjust—adjust.
If someone needs to listen—listen.
If someone needs to confront—do it in love.

Pride makes points. Humility touches hearts.

Pride makes points. Humility touches hearts.

Now is the time to build the family bridge and make it strong for generations to come.

Husbands and wives—lead the way. Be the example of humility to each other and to your children. You set the tone. Leadership matters.

Raising kids is hard—between correction and connection—but we can do it with Jesus.

As we go, so goes our family.
Let’s lead with humility and build strong bridges in our homes.

This is how we stay close throughout life—and build lasting relationships with our children even as they become adults.

As we approach this Palm Sunday weekend, may we look to Jesus and build strong family bridges through humility.

God has a great purpose for you—
The best is yet to come!
